ABIM CONDEMNS MILITARY COUP BY MYANMAR JUNTA : FUTURE OF DEMOCRACY, JUSTICE & HUMAN RIGHTS THREATENED

Muslim Youth Movement Malaysia (ABIM) condemns the military coup and the
undemocratic act of Myanmar Junta in detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other
leaders who were democratically elected by the people.

ABIM firmly contends that the Junta government is not legitimate since it is not
elected by the people and certainly not the government that the people need.

It should be emphasized that democracy is a significant element in determining the
rise and fall of a modern state’s socioeconomics.

Without the foundation of democracy, the people of Myanmar will be victimized given
the collapse of socioeconomics of the country in denying their democratic rights.

The situation is even more alarming considering the humanitarian crisis involving the
Rohingya Muslims as they are being persecuted by the government of Myanmar in
recent years and their rights to citizenship denied.

It should be emphasized that the human rights records of the Myanmar military Junta
towards other ethnic groups as well as the people of Myanmar as a whole is doubtful
and worrying.

Therefore, the latest actions of the Myanmar military junta have only aggravated the
humanitarian crisis in the Southeast Asian region.

ABIM views with concern the current situation which poses a question on the efficacy
of Provisional Measures Order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ)
directing Myanmar to stop all acts that amount to or contribute to the crime of
genocide crimes against the Rohingya including killing, rape and destruction of
homes and villages.

Therefore, with all the concerns expressed, ABIM urges ASEAN members with
Brunei as the acting chairman to unanimously express their strong rejection of the
Myanmar Junta government.

In addition, organisations such as ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human
Rights (AICHR) should join the cause to put pressure on the Junta government that
has explicitly violated human rights principle in the ASEAN region during the 32rd
AICHR meeting scheduled to begin today until 5th of February.
