MEDIA STATEMENT:
ABIM URGES IMMEDIATE HALT TO INDIA-PAKISTAN ARMED CONFLICT
8 May 2025 / 9 Zulkaedah 1446H
The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) strongly urges an immediate end to the armed conflict between India and Pakistan to prevent further bloodshed, particularly among innocent civilians in both countries.
ABIM condemns the provocative actions taken by the Indian government that have contributed to escalating tensions leading up to the armed attacks. These include the decision to close dams that serve as critical water sources for Pakistan — a move that violates humanitarian principles and the spirit of international neighborliness.
ABIM also views the incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir, with grave concern, recognizing it as a major trigger for the current conflict. This incident must be investigated fairly, independently, and transparently, to prevent it from being used as a justification for military actions that could further aggravate the situation and oppress civilians in the conflict zone.
This conflict risks fueling Islamophobia and xenophobia, not only in South Asia but also within global discourse. It also exposes the failure of the United Nations (UN) to play an effective role as a global peacekeeping body, as tensions were allowed to escalate into armed confrontation.
ABIM also condemns the unprofessional conduct of certain Indian media practitioners who have ridiculed the initiative by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to act as a peace intermediary. Such actions are inappropriate and contradict the principles of international diplomacy.
The ongoing conflict in this strategic region has significant implications for global geo-economic and political stability, particularly as it involves two nuclear powers representing two of the world’s major religions — Islam and Hinduism.
Therefore, ABIM calls on the international community to act swiftly to end this conflict and urges all parties involved to return to the negotiating table in pursuit of regional and global peace.
